The FAANG Resume Is Not What You Think
Most candidates over-engineer their resumes for FAANG companies. They use complex designs, cram in every technology, and write essays about each role. In reality, Google, Amazon, Meta, Apple, and Microsoft prefer clean, concise, impact-driven resumes — and their ATS systems demand it.
What FAANG Recruiters Have Told Us
After reviewing advice from ex-Google and ex-Amazon recruiters, a few consistent themes emerge:
- One page is strongly preferred, even for senior engineers (two pages maximum for staff+ level)
- Simple formatting wins — No colours, no graphics, no multi-column layouts
- Impact over responsibilities — They want to see what you achieved, not what you were supposed to do
- Numbers are non-negotiable — Every bullet should contain a metric if possible
- Leadership signals matter at every level — Even junior candidates should show initiative
The Google-Approved Resume Structure
Google's own career advice recommends this order:
- Contact Information — Name, email, phone, LinkedIn, GitHub
- Education — Degree, university, GPA (if strong), relevant coursework
- Experience — Reverse chronological, 3-5 bullets per role
- Projects — Especially important for new grads and early-career engineers
- Technical Skills — Clean, categorised list
- Awards and Leadership — Optional but valuable
- "Reduced API response time by 65% (from 1.2s to 420ms) by implementing Redis caching and query optimisation across 3 critical endpoints"
- "Increased user retention by 12% by designing and A/B testing a new onboarding flow, driving an estimated 8M in annual recurring revenue"
- "Led migration of 15 microservices from EC2 to EKS, reducing deployment time from 45 minutes to 8 minutes and achieving 99.99% uptime"
- Categorise clearly: Languages, Frameworks, Cloud, Databases, Tools
- Include proficiency context where helpful: "Python (5 years, production-level)"
- Match the JD terminology exactly
- Rate yourself on a scale (3/5 stars in Python looks amateurish)
- List technologies you used once in a tutorial
- Include Microsoft Office (it is assumed)
- Generic resumes — If you are sending the same resume to Google and a local startup, you are doing it wrong
- No measurable impact — "Worked on the search team" tells nothing. "Improved search relevance by 8% for 500M+ daily queries" tells everything.
- Typos and inconsistent formatting — At scale, recruiters look for reasons to say no. Do not give them one.
- Missing GitHub or portfolio — For engineering roles, this is expected
- Exceeding one page unnecessarily — FAANG recruiters review hundreds of resumes daily. Respect their time.
- Fancy templates — These companies use ATS heavily. A clean, single-column layout is essential. Verify with our ATS Checker.
- Include GPA if it is 3.5+ (or 8.0+ CGPA in Indian grading)
- List relevant coursework: Algorithms, Operating Systems, Machine Learning, Distributed Systems
- Mention publications, teaching assistant roles, or research projects
- For experienced candidates, education can be brief — one or two lines is fine
The XYZ Formula for Experience Bullets
Google explicitly recommends the XYZ formula:
"Accomplished [X] as measured by [Y], by doing [Z]."
Examples:
Company-Specific Insights
Google: Values scale, innovation, and Googleyness (intellectual humility, collaboration). Mention open source contributions. Show how you handled ambiguity.
Amazon: Every bullet should map to at least one Leadership Principle — Customer Obsession, Ownership, Bias for Action, Deliver Results, etc. Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result).
Meta (Facebook): Emphasises speed of execution and impact. They value "move fast" culture. Highlight rapid iteration, product thinking, and cross-functional collaboration.
Apple: Values craftsmanship and attention to detail. Emphasise quality, user experience, and deep technical expertise. Apple is famously secretive — show you can discuss impact without revealing proprietary details.
Microsoft: Focuses on growth mindset and collaboration. Highlight learning agility, cross-team projects, and inclusive leadership.
Technical Skills Formatting
FAANG ATS systems are sophisticated but still need clean formatting.
